Our Mission

私たちPicture This Japanのミッションは主に2つ。

  1. エンパワメント:被写体にされがちな社会的に声の小さい人々が撮る側に立ち、自身の作品を通して自分と向き合い、内なる声を見出すこと。
  2. ニュース·アート·メディア上の多様性:マイノリティーと呼ばれる人たちが、彼等の視点から主体的に表現し発信することで、メインストリームメディアでは見えにくい視点や世界を提供すること。

We, Picture This Japan, have 2 main missions. 

  1. Empowerment: By giving a camera to the voiceless in our society and find their own voice. 
  2. Offering diverse visions in the media: By creating a platform for so-called “Minority” people to tell their own stories, we add different point of view that is new to the mainstream media.

米国シカゴのコロンビア大学卒業後、中西部の新聞社でフォトジャーナリストとして勤務。写真プロジェクト「STAND:性暴力サバイバー達」がアメリカでドキュメンタリーとなり、ワシントンDCの国会議員オフィスからハワイの女性刑務所まで、全米各地で展示会と講演会を展開。2006年より日本でも同活動を行う。2002年ワシントンDCよりビジョナリーアワード、2008年やよりジャーナリスト賞、2011年シカゴの母校より卒業生賞受賞。2007年著書「STAND 立ち上がる選択」(フォレストブックス)、2020年共著「マスコミ·セクハラ白書」文藝春秋、2020年監修「横浜(KOKO)-「外国につながる」ではひとくくりにできない中高生の作品集」出版。2018年に団体Picture This Japanを設立、代表を務める。

Graduated from Columbia College Chicago with B.A. in Photography/Photojournalism. She has worked for several daily newspapers in the US Midwest as a staff photojournalist. After Her project “STAND: Faces of Rape & Sexual Abuse Survivors” became a cable TV documentary, she started traveling for exhibitions and speaking engagements throughout US and Japan. She is a recipient of 2002 Visuary Award from Washington DC Rape Crisis Center, 2008 Yayori Journalists Award for Human Rights, and 2011 Alumni of the Year from Columbia College Chicago. Her memoir “STAND” was published in Japan in 2007 and she wrote special essays to several books. Also published is “KOKO Yokohama” photobook with the pictures from Yokohama International Youth Photo Project in which she is the executive director.
